20 January 2019, Hong Kong: Organized by the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (Federation), subvented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, together with the financial backing of our new Title Sponsor, Cathay Pacific, the Public Voting Announcement Press Conference for the “Cathay Pacific 2018 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” (Awards) was held today at D‧Park to disseminate details of the public voting.
Officiating VIPs included Dr. Karl C. KWOK, MH, Vice-President of the Federation, Mr. Paul LOO, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Cathay Pacific, Ms. LOU Wai Yi, Rebecca, Assistant Director (Leisure Services) 2 of Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Ms. Vivien LAU, BBS, JP, Vice-President of the Federation cum Chairperson of Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards Organizing Committee. Nominated athletes and teams were also present to show their support for the event and to seek support from the public to cast their votes for their favourite athletes. A public voting counter was also arranged on-site to encourage public voting.
This annual “Hong Kong Sports Stars Oscars” aims to recognize the outstanding performance of Hong Kong athletes in 2018 and to create role models for youth in the community. Dr. Karl C. KWOK, Vice-President of the Federation said: “The Federation received a total of 140 nominations from 50 Sports Associations for these Awards, which breaks the record of last year. Thank you for the staunch support from these Sports Associations! Let’s vote and support our Hong Kong athletes! Your vote is an affirmation of their success, as well as being motivation for them to keep striving for excellence on the world stage.”
Mr. Paul LOO, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, Cathay Pacific Airways Limited, said: “These young athletes are blessed with great talent and are wonderful ambassadors for Hong Kong. As Hong Kong’s home airline, Cathay Pacific is committed to nurturing the young people of our city and we are extremely proud of all sportsmen who represent Hong Kong. We are excited to be the Title Sponsor of the Hong Kong Sports Star Awards and hope the public will give their support to this event by voting for their favourite homegrown athletes.”
There are six Awards categories, of which four – namely the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards”, “Hong Kong Junior Sports Stars Awards”, “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport”, and “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for Team Event” – are open for public voting from today until 14 February 2019. The public could visit the official website at https://sportstar2018.hkolympic.org to cast their votes. Each successful voter will automatically qualify for the lucky draw and have a chance to win prizes sponsored by Cathay Pacific, Fila and Fitness First with a total value of over HK$120,000 (Trade Promotion Competition Licence no.: 51609, 51610). The athlete who receives the highest number of votes among the eight winners of the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards” will be awarded the “Cathay Pacific Best of the Best Hong Kong Sports Stars Award”. The results of the Awards will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony, to be held on 26 March 2019 at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
